Re: witch one?
7mm rem mag no doubt about it.
I currently own both calibers with the 30-06 shooting 180 grain soft points and the 7mm rem mag shooting 160 grain accubonds. The 30-06 is fantastic round for anything in north america but when it comes to whitetail i prefer something a little flatter and smaller especially if its at ranges like yours. If i were to choose a caliber it would be a 270. win or 243. win for whitetail for under 300 yards 350 max. For ranges over 350 or ranges like yours (500 yards) i wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger with my 7mm rem mag. I would most likely shoot 150 grain bullet something like the nosler accubond.
So 7mm all the way!!
By the way, im getting rid of the 30-06 and i have a 300. wsm on the way and will be here later tonight

Re: witch one?
I love my 30-06, but if I was to take a poke at 500yds, I personaly would feel better having the speed that the 7mag offers. A 160ish+ grain at light speed compared to a 180 from my trusty ol' punken lobber.....Ya 7mag.
If a person is fully confident with his equipment, and personal ability, the -06 will do the job just fine, and on even bigger game than deer at 500yds, but Id still personaly opt for flatter/faster the 7mag.
Im sure there are other opinions, and they may not mirror mine. I just feel at that range and beyond, the faster/flatter bullet is a bit more forgiving for drop or wind correction.

Re: witch one?
7 Mag hands down. If you need to shoot further you have the gun to do it.

Both will do the job but if I could only chose one it would be the 7 Rem Mag because of
the bullet choices .

Absolutely! You load it with a 165grn boat tail bullet or better, you will kill a deer to 600+ with the 30-06. You just won't have as a laser like you will with the 7mm. If you compare equal weight bullets between the two, you will find the 7RM is going to hit harder, faster! It is all a matter of preference. I have a load in an 18" 308 Winny that prints 1MOA or better if I do my part to 700 yards (my same load in a 22" would yield enough velocity to be lethal for a deer at 700.... just ;)! It just does not carry enough snot to knock a deer down at that distance with the 168 A-max I am currently loading. If I were to go up to a 175 or 180 boat tail, then it becomes a possibility, but I have a 300WSM to take care of shots over 500yrds.
