What's the best 6mm?

I'm looking for a 6mm that has good barrel life but can still push a 107 gr bullet out to a 1000 yards for punching paper? I would like the fastest one that will still get 2000 to 2500 rounds down the barrel. So lets hear it.

Look at the 243 and up. The 6-284 looks very neat ;-)

But why limit you self to 6mm why not a 6.5 or 7mm like 260 or 6.5 creedmoor or 7-08 or a 280 ?
Those will have better barrel live

I am a fan of 243AI - I think I has a very good balance of speed, brass quality, availability, barrel life and general functionality.

What a HUGE can of worms you opened on this one!

The 6 PPC has won a ton of SR matches. The 6 BR has won alot of 600 yd benchrest matches, but they're attempting to upsize it just a bit for the 1000 yd game. From 6 Dashers and Long Dashers, to 6 BRX to 6X47 Lapua and AI 6X47 Lapua, 6 XC is David Tubbs creation I believe and alot of guys are trying it at 1000. The list goes on and on and on and on.........and I am only remembering a very few at the moment.

Oh, lets go even bigger and there's the 243, 243AI, 6MM Rem. 6mm AI, 6-284, 6-06, 6 WSM.........I am probably forgetting dozens in the mix.

6mm SM, 6mm CM, 243 WSSM, 6mm RSAUM, 6-250 AI, ............?? TONS of em.

I personally know that a 6mm Remington will last a very very long time. Lost count of the number I shot at PD's before it was shot out, but it's not the most accurate 6mm on the line. Gotta go smaller case capacity if you want ultimate precision. Sacrifice a little velocity to get better accuracy and even longer barrel life

FWIW, I am playing with the AI 6X47 Lapua as of most recent. Not saying it's the best, but it's gotta be right in the ballpark. 6XC is just slightly bigger, 6 Dashers are a touch smaller. Seems I read somewhere that the 6 LD has a world record at 1000 yds, but I am going off memory which tends to get distorted sometimes.

Not exactly what you are looking for but the 6dasher is the King of benchrest competition currently. Won more 600-1000yd. national titles than anything else this year. Cleaned up in the spring at the 600 and 1000yd(Terry Balding, Richard Schatz, and Robert Hoppe?? if memory serves couldn't find the article ). nationals in california and did it again in St. Louis at the IBS 600yd. nationals(Richard Schatz).



I got to see his targets in heavy and light gun. He uses the same rifle. The smallest group was .9" and the largest was just over 3". He maintained these groups for almost 90rounds and two days through the course of the match.

The dasher is a improved br case so fireforming is needed. It typically loves RL15 or Varget in the 30-34gr. range. It will send a 105 at 3000-3050fps. It has the ability to shoot in the .1's with very little tuning. However good quality brass is the key. It has amazing ability to agge. or consistently group well. If you are competing with it, and competition is close you barrel life might be in the 2-2500. But in the beginning when Richard used it when no one else did he could get more rounds before rebarrelling. No custom dies needed I bought a redding FL bushing die set for $200.

Richard and Sam Hall have passed this trophy back and forth for five years I think. Sam also uses a dasher if memory serves me. If you know any of them ask. The benchrest bunch are the most helpful people I have ever met. Not to many will disclose helpful hints on success when they know you will be competing against them the next day.

Yeah the 6xc 6-47 and dasher and br is what i was looking at. For those who suggested 6-284 and other big ones like 243ai and 6-06 they would be great but i already have some barrel burners. I think im leaning towards one that dose not need to be fire formed. At this point I will not be competing with it just a lot of shooting practice for cheap,rock chucks,yotes,ect.
