what twist?

Had been looking at a remington 700 ss 5R in 308 for awhile. decided to cut my costs a bit and am looking at the 700 sps varmint / tactical model instead. the 5R has 11.25 twist, what twist does the SPS have in its barrel? I have several boxes of FGMM in 175 gr I had gotten for the 5R. will they shoot ok in either a 1:12 or a 1:10 twist barrel?

Re: what twist?

It seems to do the best with 150/155 bulets the best so far. I played with some 168 but the 155 shot better. For what I use it for the amax work very good. Some day I might try some 178s but not in a hurry to work up a new load.

Re: what twist?

The 175 smk is 1.24 inches long. At a muzzle velocity of 2600 fps and a twist rate of 1 in 12" that calculates out to a Miller stability factor of 1.67 which is well above the minimum recommended 1.3. Basically, either barrel will stabilize them just fine.

Re: what twist?

so the standard for 308 (maybe most popular) twist is 1:10? Which in theory would be good for anything 150 grns on up? Please correct me if im wrong.

Re: what twist?

Seems that Remington uses 10" on the lighter barrels and 12" on the heavier barrels. I'm not sure what their thought process on this is but in reality the 11.25 will stabilize anything that you would ever shoot out of a .308 including the very long 208 grain bullets. The 1 in 10" twist is more than anyone could possibly need in a .308. The SPS is a 1 in 10", which may be a little more than you need but will be fine.
