What bullets in .300RUM or .280AI for coyotes and minimal pelt damage?
I don't really have a coyote specific weapon but I'd like to work up a load in either .300RUM or .280AI that will blow right through them, or not exit at all. Is this realistic to achieve? I need it to be good in cold weather. If you've got a recipe that's accurate, I'm all ears.

I would use a high density bullet loaded at a low velocity for either caliber. On the other end of the spectrum use a varmint bullet and push it hard so that it expands in the body cavity with no exit. It's going to have to be a trial and error process. I know others will chime in with better ideas that use the calibers.

Re: What bullets in .300RUM or .280AI for coyotes and minimal pelt damage?
I'm a .277 man. Sierra used to sell hard copper HPBT's 140's for 277 and 160's for 284. we used to use them on 1/2 inch steel swinging targets and those hard copper rounds would punch right through the steel at up to 200 yards. So I started using them on Yotes to get the prime winter pelts. all it would leave is a little hole.
Now I use 140's or 150's in my 277 Sierra game king spbt loaded up near max speed. Small animals or even deer on classic broad side a heart lung shot goes through so fast that it doesn't even expand
for your 30 cal I would look into Full Metal Jacket bullets. I've only seen them around 150 gr but they also have no expansion.

Not sure about your 280 ai but i have had experience shooting 180 gr swift scirroco and 168 barnes tts out of 300 rum on caribou and both had massive exit wounds even past 350 yards. Thats a lot of gun for yotes but i see your thought about the ranges that it will reach.

Just a thought. Don't know if you have seen the video or not, but John Burns I believe it was shot a yote at 1017 with a 243 using 107SMK's. Why not just buy a rifle to fit the game you are hunting with an appropriate caliber. If money is the issue then I understand completely.

I generally agree here. Get yourself a nonexpanding bullet and push it fast.

Re: What bullets in .300RUM or .280AI for coyotes and minimal pelt damage?
you guys must have some serious pansy coyotes. I hit them with a 7stw with a 162gr. amax, blows a 6inch exit hole and still have some running up to 50-100yrds with chest hits???? I tried the normal coyote rounds, 22-250, 243, 204 etc and they always left me watching at least one or tow coyotes a year hitting the ground then jumping up and running 5-600yards further to the timber.
Of course I also shot a fox with a 22-250 shooting 50gr.ballistic tip's and it took one shot hit the ground then it too started running off and took a folow up shot.
