Vortex viper 4-16x or 6-24x

I'll be medium to long range(only up to 600 yds) elk hunting with a 300 WM this fall. Not sure which power Vortex Viper PST scope. 4-16x or 6-24x? 1st focal plane or not? Any suggestions? Comments on Vortex Viper?

I say 4-16 for sure. I shot 1000 this evening with my 4-16, and it worked just fin. You don't need the extra weight and bulk of the 6-24 if you are not shooting past 6-800 often.

I shoot with the 16x and had a 20x Viper before this one. I can tell you that the only time I want a 24 is to see my hits better on steel at 500 plus. The 16 is nice because it is shorter. If I had it to do over again I still would buy the 16x but to each his own.

I too have had both the 4-16 and the 6-24 in FFP. I'd personally go with the 6-24 for out to 600 yards, but I prefer higher magnification. For under 100 yards the 6x might be a little much, but still manageable unless you have a fast moving target. I had the 4-16 on an AR for coyote calling and never had any intentions of shooting beyond 400 yards with it. You can always turn that 24x down to 16x. I'd probably make my decision based off of how close your closest shot would most likely be instead of basing it off of your longest potential shot. If your closest shot will be under 75 yards, I'd certainly go for the 4-16, but that's just my .02.

I have two Vortex 4-16's and one 6-24. I would recommend the 4-16 for hunting. I shot a 1200 yard target with mine a few weeks ago..........it was a LARGE target though
