using rangefinders

just got a leica 1200 rangefinder and have just been playing about with it was nearly dark when i was trying it .anyway to range a tareget past 800 yards would you need to hold it very steady in order to get a reading. thanks

Keep playing with it and you'll quickly catch on.

During fall mornings in the field actually hunting up to 1200 yards is reasonable (hand held) under the proper conditions.

As the sun moves and shadows change ranges normally drop to where maybe 1K is all that is reliable hand held.

I find tripods a pain even from a 'hide' location. Something to rest it on or against helps.

To add to what Roy said - It is also dependant on the size of the intended target.

thanks for the replys what a great bit of kit this is so simmple and it just works .am pleased i went for the leica instead of the complicated leoupoulod model.
