I had a unique oportunity to go and do some longrange shooting with my Pawpaw a few months back. I forgot I had taken these pics. My grandpaw is one of those old school types that thought you couldnt shoot a rifle past 250 yards
. Well I explained to him what all it took to make a long range shot and he started turning that engineering brain of his. He said he wanted to go and try a shot at 450 yards. I just laughed and set him up on my human silhoutte at 775 yards. I dialed the scope up for him and he laid down behind the rifle. I told him to dial .75 MOA of right wind. He broke the shot and said he pulled it a little high right. He looked back through the scope and saw that he had knocked over the target. I have never seen his eyes so wide open in my life. I was so happy he got a first round hit at 775 I almost started crying! As he called it, he hit a little high right on the plate but a hit none the less! His shot is the one closest to his finger.
Well I thought I would have some real fun now while he was with me.
I told him I was going to hit my hog silhoutte at 1500 yards on my first shot. He just laughed and said, "It cant be done bub!" I just smiled back at him and drove to the 1500 yard line. Of course he could not even see the target so I set up my Swarovski spotting scope for him to look through and call my shot for me.
I dialed up the dope and put on 4 MOA of right wind. I got behind my rifle and was watching the mirrage very closely. It was staying steady so I sent the first round down range. I recovered and saw the round hit on the shoulder!!!
I shot two more times and could not tell if I had a hit or not. When we packed up my gear and drove down to the hog he almost fell out of the Kubota he was so dumbfounded. Truth be told I nearly did too!! I just put a 3 round group on a hog silhoutte at 1500 yards!!! Granted one was on the foot but still, I was pumped!!
Here was the second shot and the third was on the hoof.
It was such a great moment in my life. Its not every day you get to go and do what you love most and share it with those you love most. God truly overflows my cup.
