Re: Tikka 270wsm to 300wsm
I imagine the 270 wsm with the 169.5 would be no better honestly, but yes it kicks pretty good. I shoot the gun well, with no flinching, but with the tikka t3 lite being well so light it has pretty noticable recoil. The more I shoot it the more I am getting used to it, its getting to be where it isnt so bad anymore, but not my choice for praticing. In a heavier gun with a better stock I imagine it wouldnt be so bad. Im just tired of getting beat up while practicing and trying to improve my long range shooting. Its probly a wonderful combo as far as a light carry gun with great power. Im switching to my new rifle that rem 7 mag and using 140 accubonds 90% sure or maybe the 160 AB, so my priority of getting the tikka calmed down isnt high anymore. My friends are mostly newer shooters so that is a factor but its at about 70% the first time they shoot my gun they catch the scope. Thats really the funnest part becasue I dont tell them and see what happens, does that make me a bad person

Re: Tikka 270wsm to 300wsm
I have talked to several guys on this site that have had no problem downing an elk beyond 500yd mark w/ a .270wsm. I have one .270wsm but have not taken it out west yet, but am having another one built by Jim at Center shot rifles. I decided on the .270wsm a couple years ago because I believe this cartridge has alot of potential. There is not alot of handloading info on it yet, but I believe that will change. I have only killed whitetail and a few fox w/ my Win mod 70 .270wsm, but several whitetail fell beyond 650yds and never took another step w/ 140 accubonds. I know elk are bigger and thicker but keep asking around on this site and you will find guys who already have downed elk at long distance with this round. Good luck w/ your decision.

Re: Tikka 270wsm to 300wsm
I'm getting a Winchester M70 that is chambered in .270 WSM and had the same question on going to a . 300 WSM.
If I understand it correctly, I won't have to do any chamber reaming, just swap barrels?
Oh Yeah,
Thanks for letting me join the Forum!

Im just wondering if its worth the swap? Will a 300wsm kill elk better than a 270wsm at 800 yards?

I imagine the 300 wsm with its ability to use larger bullets such as a 200 gr accubond has the ability to deliver more energy at londer ranges. You would have to run the numbers on a ballistic program to really see ehat the difference is between that and a 140 gr 277 bullet.

The BCs are close enought that it really just comes down to shot placement. I like the 300 due to the varity of bullets, but the 270 should have a bit less kick. I'd stick with what ya got and play around with loads. I know a couple guys up here in NW Montana that have put away their 300s for the 270s, I'm not willing to give mine up just yet, but that may change. Let us know what you decide, I'd love to hear more on what the 270 will do in the real world.

Re: Tikka 270wsm to 300wsm
Just a thought. Im not sure if you know this or not but all tikkas are built on a long action, so you're not limited to short action calibers. For long range elk you could even switch it to a 338 win mag or something, all you would have to do is rebarrel and get the bigger mag. The ultras are to long for any of the mags that come from tikka and I am not sure if there is any aftermarket bottom metal for them, someone I thought said something about AI mag system? Just thought you would want to know.
