Stupid Idea?

Well, I got a .300wsm and im wanting to put a Leupold VX-III in 6.5-20x50 with a Varmint hunter reticle.

Is this a stupid idea? I have been told it is, but I will be going after Pigs/goats at long ranges. upto 600yards when I get the skill.

Am I better off with a lower magnification?

Thanks, Im open to ideas from the more experienced.

I think it would be a good idea if the ballistics match up to the reticle. You might be better off getting a scope with a milldot. Maybe Leupold's new Mark 2 scope would fit the bill, but I haven't heard of anyone trying of these scopes yet.

i use a 3.5X15X50 Nightforce NSX on my 300 win mag. This plenty of power for an all round hunting rifle and I shoot this rifle out to 1K and have taken gamme as far as 777 Yards. I would not go with a "Varmint reticle" I would and did go with "Turrets". If you insist on a reticle with a hold over reticle a "Mill Dot" of a "MOA" would be prefered

Custome shop

I would look at that scope with either the TMR or just fine duplex and have the custom shop install M1 knbos.

I think you are better serverd learing how to dial for yardage than hold over.

I had a Vx111 6.-20-40 with M1 knobs installed. If I could of affored it I would of wnet with a MK4 or a Nightforce.

By the way--you pay about as much to have m1 knobs installed as you do the premium for the Varmit retical
