Spring bear hunts? I need ideas.

Guys,

I was thinking about trying for a bear somewhere this spring, but have zero experience with it.

Any ideas? Where should I apply (which states?), Canada?

Anyplace with over the counter licenses?

Other species besides bear in the spring? (I couldn't think of any).

I'd really like to make it a 'long range' hunt and bring my 338AM

Come to the southern Oregon coast. True long range country and lots of bears. We have over 30,000 bears spread over 40,000 square miles. Bring some good binos and glass clearcuts. You'll get a bear. They are like rats over there. I have got two this year and am planning another trip down there to fill my third tag. I like to hunt near Gold Beach. There was a big fire several years ago and there is lots of grass for the spring bears to eat. The spring hunts are draws and fall hunts are over the counter.

You dont need to win the lotto to hunt here. A license in 85 bucks a black bear tag is around 300 bucks and you dont need a guide. Round trip air fare is reasonable and from there it depends on where you want to go and how you want to get there. You can spend as little as 800-1000 bucks including your airfare,license, tag and your hunting expenses to the sky is the limit.

What type of bear hunt do you want? Super remote, high country, low country, do you want to hike alot every day, how hard do you want to work, do you want to live out of a back pack or a hotel or somewhere in the middle? Answer these questions and I can give you an estimate as to how much it may cost you. Getting here and hunting isnt as big an ordeal as you may think with a bit of research.

The fact that its not $10's of thousands is welcome news. I will definitely think more seriously about a hunt in Alaska.

Could be that much if you wanted to spend that much but there are alot of ways to economize and keep it reasonable for a hunter on a budget. You can have a great time up here without spending alot of coin. Now if you want a Grizzly, that is another story. You would be required to hire a guide and that would set ya back 12+K for a good hunt. For Blackies you dont need a guide and can DIY if you desire. Depending on the region, most of June is a great time to find rutting bears in the open looking for love. Just something to file away in the back of your mind.
