scope opinion

After coming out of my long retirement from the long range game, I am on the home stretch for getting my gear all set back up. One question I got for you guys out there is what you think of scope magnification. I did use all combinations of the 20x scopes from Nightforce and Leupold years ago and I have a new in the box 6.5-20x50mm Leupold VXIII 30mm that i am thinking of putting on but i am still open for suggestions. I hunt heavily coyote and deer sized game from 800-1200yds with an average being 800-900yards. 1200yards is a rare thing at my hunting areas but i want to be able to have the option. Was considering the Sightron 8-32x56 but i am trying to save some cash where i can. Any opinions appreciated. I shoot all 338 Lapua rifles.

What you have already is an awfully nice scope for the applications you list. If you want more magnification though sell it and "go big".

Personally I prefer the Mark IV's on heavy recoiling magnums especially if they are braked because the true tactical scopes are just built to be more shock resistant than most scopes.

the lupy will work great as long as you dial for your correction.mybuddy uses one on his 284 improved and he smacks my 12 x 14 inch plate at 1460 yards. I use the 8.5 x 25 lupy on my edge and it tracks just fine.

Re: scope opinion

Great posts thanks. One thing to consider i shot all heavy benchrest guns to hunt and shoot off cliff basins. so recoil is not a real issue at 40 plus pound gun with a brake and shooting off a solid rest.

BTW, for about 130.00 you can send it back to Leupold and have a TMR or Mil Dot reticle installed which has a long list of advantages including giving you essentially a grid to tell you exactly by how much you miss for quick adjustment back to target.

I'll be sending in my scope (just like yours) as well as two of my Mark 4's in the spring for the TMR reticles for the above reasons.

For about the same money they will also make you a custom drop reticle based on your own ballistic data.

I wish I could get the MP-8 that IOR uses but alas that's not an option except on IOR's (great scopes worthy of consideration if you upgrade).

Re: scope opinion

wild rose, they will make a reticle based on your cartridge stats? I know they are making turrets but did not realize they would do it in a reticle also, that would be nice.

No they make custom turrets based on your ballistic data. They have about 20 different reticles that they make though and can change out your reticle if you decide on something different.
