Rifle cal. pistols?

How far can a rig like that feasibly kill a whitetail? What is the weight of said pistol? What would be the ideal caliber to whack a deer at said distance? What about glass, what does a guy use for something like this? My curiosity has been peaked in this adventure recently after seeing the draws I would have to hike to get to deer and spots to hunt deer. I am thinking out loud here, but think it would be ideal for hiking into a distant spot and more comfortable to carry than a rifle.

I had the same itch over the summer and i scrached it. Ended up buying a Savage Striker from someone on here in 7mm-08. He had it recrowned but other than that it is factory. He told me it would shoot around an inch groups at 100 but he never shot it farther than that. Well i loaded up some 130 SMKs and found a good load that shoots under an inch at 100 and have shot several groups at 550yds that have been right around MOA. While researching i found that some people use pistols out to 1000 yards and beyond however the "pistols" they were useing weighed as much as or more than most rifles. They were also useing rifle scopes and had muzzlebreaks on them. I will say that in order to use a pistol scope like what i have on mine (2-7x32) you must have a super stable rest. I used it to groundhog hunt this past summer and even though most shots were under 150 yards it was extreamly difficult to hold still even with shooting sticks. If you do buy one you can get a replacement barrel from savage_barrels for around 185 bucks in just about any caliber you want. I thought about rebarreling mine to 6BR to shoot Ghogs

My Savage striker in the factory laminate stock weighed 8.5 pounds topped with a 6.5-20x40 Leupold. I used a cut down factory rifle barrel in .243, accuracy was on par with a good bolt gun.



I also used the factory 14" .308 barrel with a pistol scope and got phenomenal accuracy with 165 grain ballistic tips and 125 grain Sierras pushing the latter to an average velocity of 2874.6 fps. Neither of my barrels had a brake but with the rifle scope on the .243 you had to be careful!

I just sold my Striker and have gone back to the break open pistols but it was a fine piece, that's for sure!
