Re: Real B.C of Hornady 6mm 105gr A-Max

S1:

I am building two .243 rifles now. I have a Ruger 77 that has been trued and pillar bedded and has a Timney trigger. I also have a model 7 that had the same thiings done but has a factory tuned trigger. I finally received my two Lilja barrels, a #6 30" for the Ruger and a #2 27" for the model 7. Both are 1:8" twis .243.

I am still undecided as to cartridges. Both started life as 6mm Remingtons and I have nearly 500 brass for them. I was thinking of chambering for heavy bullets in the Ruger for critters and paper out to 1000, and 55 noslers in the model 7 for use as a walking varminter on coyotes, crows, gophers, pdogs, etc.

I've considered the 6mm Improved in both because I have lots of brass. Is this wise or should I start with new brass and not base my decision on brass as it's pretty cheap to replace? I'm also considering the 6mm Dasher, 6 BR IMP UBL, 6BR Norma and 6-284. They don't have to be chambered to the same cartridge. FWIW, from what I've been told, the Ruger action and magazine is longer than a remington 700 short action, while the Rem model 7 action and magazine is shorter than a 700 short action.

What do you think???

Thanks!

Any suggestions on

Sheldon, thinking about the same thing right now. My conclusion is that I would look at a 243based cartridge. Great case design and match quality available if desired.

The 6 Rem is also wonderful and would be a great choice in a shorter barrel, but since you will be using a long barrel, I would consider smaller cases. The 243 and 6mm AI are very similar and equally accurate.

Big thing I am hearing about the AI of either version is throat erosion. Both have fairly short lives. In 1000yd BR, there is big interest in the 6BR Norma and wildcats based on improved 22-250 cases.

These are able to get the 105 gr bullets to 3000fps with very little powder, need long barrels though. This reduces throat wear and barrel heat. If your rifles will not see extensive shooting then I would suggest going 243 as a min. If going to do lots, consider a 6BR or one of these 22-250 wildcats.

I am presently shooting a 6BR with 87gr Vmax at clays from 700 to 800yds. Lots of fun and makes wind doping critical. Am looking at something that can launch 105gr Amax for improved wind drift. Probably use a 243 in a 26" barrel and muzzle brake.

Be interested to see what you decide on...

Jerry
