Public land mule deer hunt

I am looking to try my hand at a mule deer this year. Born and raised in the southeast I have hunted primary whitetails my whole life. I was wanting to go west this year and try to get a long range mule deer without breaking the bank. Does anyone know of some good public hunting with over the counter tags. Any info would be great.
