My longest kill so far.

It's only 540 yds, not long to some but I am new to the game and have been practicing a lot. Well today my practice finally paid off. I decided to go coyote hunting with a buddy. Started out with 4 howls to peak the intrest, glassing I found one that popped up at 540 yds. So I get everything set up, the gun is steady, and trigger pull too light. I barely touched it and went off (guess it was the excitement that got to me). I thought I had blew it as the dog ran off, but I immediatley put the foxpro one coyote pup dist. and about 2 min later there was another dog standing in the same spot. This time I made sure I kept the safety on till I was absolutely ready. Ranged againg with the Leicas to verify. 540 on the dot. Dialed up 8.5 MOA, checked the wind slight breeze from left to right hardly noticeable. Put the cross hairs right on the brisket (he was facing me) and aimed at his right side and squeezed the trigger. Got the scope back on him just in time to see it hit. The his was a little lower that I wanted, and the wind took it a little more that I had anticipated. But all in all it was a good day. The third dog we called in was being chased by a doe over the hill so we didn't get him. I assume she had a little one near by.

Gear:
Remington 700 VSSF .22-250, stock except Timney trigger.
Leica 900
Nikon Monarch UCC 5.5-16.5x44
52 gr. AMAX behing 33.5 gr H4895

nice shot. A coyote at 540 is a long shot in my book. I have a 243 I hope to stretch the legs on this winter. I doubt I will get out that far but 450 is a nice goal for me.

Parkerb14,
Great shot! We all know there has been much longer shots, but a coyote at 540 yards it's a long ways! If I take my rangefinder and find a bush at 540 yds and then I imagine a coyote.... You should be proud, good shooting!

Great shot Parker. Until a month ago my long shot was 340 yards on a coyote with a 223 wssm. About a month ago I was invited to join Dwayne Wessinger(from Buck and Boar in S.C.) and Bob Hart (of Robert W. Hart & Son, Inc in Nescopeck, Pa.) to shoot nuissance permits on whitetails in western New York state. What a thrill to join those guys and a few more of their friends.

I connected on my first really long range shot. I harvasted a whitetail doe at 678 yards with 1 shot from a 30 Hart that Bob had built for Johnny Heath. Johnny was kind enough to let me shoot his rifle and after ranging the distance and following Bob's instructions I connected. 1 shot, 1 kill, what a thrill for me.

Having lost my left leg 23 years ago and having been diagnosed with brain cancer in 2001, It's nice to know there are still people who are willing to help others and there are still ways to enjoy hunting.

As stated already -a 22-250 w/a 52gr amax on a coyote at 540 is a great shot.

I've killed a couple at 400 and and that is a small target .

I have a 5.5x16.5 nikon also it has been one heck of a scope for $350.

Mikenc ,you ever get out boise , idaho way i'd be glad to take you predator hunting -i don't do much of any game hunting.

Congradulations on the 678yd whitetail shot !!
