McMillan A-5 stock

Looking at a McMillan A-5 stock what is that hook or cut out in the bottom for, just behind the pistol grip ?
How does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul?

It's also widely used for the non-trigger hand (the web between your index finger and thumb) when shooting prone.
