LR "Golf" results

Went out for a round of Long Range Golf last Saturday with my dad and one of his customers. We had 9 "holes" to shoot (14" x 14" steel plates) ranging from 350 yds to 950 yds. Each shooter shot until a hit was achieved on each gong, the shooter with the least amount of shots taken to achieve 1 hit on each gong was the winner.
Best Possible Score = 9

Contestants:

"The Customer"- Shooting his brand new "7 Iron" (built by my dad)
7mm Rem Mag, Browning A-Bolt, Proof Research Carbon Fiber Barrel
Note: "The Customer" is new to LR shooting past 500 yds

Me- Shooting my tried and true "6 Iron" (also built by my dad)
6mm x 47 Lapua, Savage Model 12, 30" Lilja

Dad- Also shooting a "7 Iron" (built by him for another customer who was unable to attend)
7mm Rem Mag, Defiance Action, Proof Research Carbon Fiber Barrel

The Shootout:

It was a great morning to shoot, 50 degrees, no wind, the sun was just rising as we were setting out our 9 "holes" on the course.

All three rifle/shooter teams proved extremely accurate as the morning progressed. The closest holes were shot first and then we progressed to the longer shots. We had some pretty good looking 3 shot groups (1 shot from each rifle/shooter), some that fit 1 MOA or less, out to 700+ yards! The competition was very very close and the score after the 8th hole was all tied at 8. The last hole at 950 yards looked to be the deciding factor, and indeed it turned out to be!!

"The Customer" shot first at the 9th hole. First shot impacted low, right under the 14" x 14" steel plate (we're all convinced if it was a 16" plate he would have got it). A few quick clicks in elevation and another round down range resulted in an audible "ding" and a shiny spot on the 950 yd plate. Score = 10

Here was my chance to pull into the lead, I was next up. I dialed my elevation, loaded a round, switched off the safety, settled in and sent one down-range... dust flew mere inches above the steel plate... aww man, I was really hoping for a first round hit! I must have jerked that one... I loaded another round, settled in and touched it off... again dust flew a few inches above the target.... what the heck!?! With my pride now gone, I loaded one more and peered through the scope. In my earlier haste to "go for the win" I had failed to notice and compensate for the mirage that was weaving upwards in my scope... at least that's my story, and I'm sticking to it . A few downward clicks and the 95 grainer met it's mark. Score = 11

Last up was dear ol' Dad. We spotted as he sent his first one... impact just right of the plate! This fit the rifle's MO thus far in the match. After adjusting the windage a few clicks his second shot whacked the plate. Score = 10

Not a bad morning all in all. A few lessons learned that's for sure... After discussion, I was the only one seeing any mirage through the scope... won't let that get me again . It was great to get out and shoot some fine rifles, with some even finer company in tow. Happy shootin'!!

Thanks for reading.

Thanks, I'm kicking myself now for not getting some pictures or anything for documentation though

That's a pretty good idea, I might have to "borrow" your game from you. Good competition while almost anyone can play, not bad at all.

I guess a 338 would have to be a 3-wood?
