Looking for a new elk gun

I think I have my mind made up that I want a 300 WSM that will shoot 200 gr Accubonds or something in that arena. I have no idea what gun to go with though. I don't have a problem packing a heavier gun around. What's most important to me is something that will shoot well out of the box.

My spending cap is about $700.00.

Any advice?

Thanks.

Re: Looking for a new elk gun

I'd personally get a Savage with an Accutrigger. Mine shoots under 1/2" with 180 gr accubonds at nearly 3000fps. Shoots around 3/4" with the 200gr AB's.

Re: Looking for a new elk gun

The area we hunt offers shots of 50 yards to as far as we are willing to shoot. I've been using a 270 Win for as long as I've been hunting. I have a 7 Rem mag but it's become more of a bench gun. If I saw a shooter at 6-700 yards it would be nice to confidently take the shot.

I really love the looks of the 700 CDL SF but it looks to be out of my price range.

Thanks.

Re: Looking for a new elk gun

I see your interested in a Remington.

I saw this fella on gunbroker. Buy it now is at $675

NIB REMINGTON 700 CDL 300 WSM BOONE AND CROCKETT : Bolt Action at GunBroker.com

I have one in 30-06 and it is a sweet machine and shoots real nice. After shipping and FFl cost you will be a little over your $700 hundred limit, but not by much.
Just thought I would give you my 2 cents.

Re: Looking for a new elk gun

What is the 270? is it a Remington? my point was, if your 270 is a regular gun(Rem, Win, Sav), you can get a "new" take off barrel from any number of smith's in just about any caliber you choose. put it on your gun, have the action trued, bedded, trigger job for maybe 400. With a little TLC it will probably shoot very well. if you buy another gun you'll put 2-300 in it to get it to shoot.

Re: Looking for a new elk gun

The 270 is a "Sportsman 78" which is a cheap model 700 from what I understand. I thought about rebarreling but the bolt face wont accomodate any of the calibers I want to try...
