Looking for a good SA deer cartridge

Up until now I have been using my 7mag to bring down the small deer here in SC. I sometimes shoot longer ranges (less than 300 yds) and would like something more powerful than a 243. I would like to hear about some calibers that utilize a .470 bolt face that are stronger and more efficient than the 243 but still can be fired from a short action rifle. I thank you all in advance

Re: Looking for a good SA deer cartridge

go with a fast twist 243 and shoot the 105 to 115 range bullets...

Get a 7mm-08 or 308 both of these are great rounds for what you are talking about.

Personally I'd go 7mm-08 and use the higher BC bullets for great downrange performance !

Re: Looking for a good SA deer cartridge

Someone on another forum mentioned the 260. Are there advantages over the 260 vs 7mm-08? Is there a large difference between these 2 cartridges?

not really... very similar actually.

I still like the 7mm-08 over the 260 which is a 6.5mm.

go read here... lots of great reading. Scroll down to 7mm-08 info.

What is the usual/average cost of a switch barrel job at a gunsmith? I may look into a 7mm-08 barrel

Re: Looking for a good SA deer cartridge

depends on your model and make of rifle, barrel you decide on etc.

Typical barrel is 250 - 300 range.

install is usually around 150 - 225
includes cut, chamber, crown, thread, etc.

expect $400 - $500 I'd suppose.

Id be happy with a take off barrel. I just dropped $300 on my long ranger in 300 win mag. I am hoping I can find a 7mm-08 for $50-100
