Long Range Coyotes

Need information on good caliber and good scope to shoots coyotes long range. I now have a 6.5 x .284 and was thinking maybe a .338. do not know much about the .338 maybe less wind drift. Also trying to figure out if a 6.5 x20 scope is enough power out to 800 yards or so. What would be the best combination, and retical choice.

For coyotes you don't need a 338 and something lighter would be a better choice
in my opinion.

Look at the ballistic tables and I think you will see what I mean.

For ranges up to 1000 yrds I would recomend the 7mm RUM or one of its equivalent
wild cats.

This is one of the flatest shooting factory rounds available and with the wide choice
of bullets one of the best for wind drift.

If you don't mind belted cases the 7mm STW would also be a good choice because they
will push a 140gr bullet 3500+ ft/sec and the RUM will exceed 3600+ft/sec.

As for as scopes, any GOOD scope around 6.5x20x50 will work . Milldots or turrents are your
choice. I like both so I have fast holdover with the mill dot and when time is not an issue
I can crank in the the zero with the turrents.

Not much beats the 243 Ackley Imp. for long range coyotes. Shoot the 115 Berger, DTAC or 105 Amax out of a fast twist barrel and it is lights out.

I'd stay away from the magnum calibers. No need for them on coyotes.

Not sure what 6.5 bullet you are shooting, but I would look into the 123grn or the 139grn Lapua Senar for your 6.5X284. That is a champion caliber for longrange anything really. A yote would be a drop in the bucket for that rifle IMHO.

I have a 270 Alen Mag for that purpose.

Shoots 140 NABs @ 3600

Heavier, higher bc bullets a little slower but flatter, if you can get 'em.

I guess I'd recommend J.E. Custom's suggestions.
