Pretty close to the same recipie I am trying out, tried loads at 91 and 92 grains of h 1000 with the 300 SMK. I was getting cratering of the primers though and a bit of a shine from the bolt face so I definately need to back it off a bit. My COAL was 3.72 with the 215m and lapua brass. I also have some of the Berger 300's coming, both the gen 1 and gen 2's. I think the lots of powder that I have are some of the newer hotter ones as I have been talking to another guy back east with the same rifle but using the 91 grain load and says he's getting no pressure sign at all. I don't have a sticky bolt lift or anything but I think I will still back it off a touch anyways. I will try loading my next batch at 90 and 89 and see if it improves any.

Bman what ranges are you generally hunting at?

That sounds like a very workable load. I would back it off a tad too.

Re: At long last got my Lapua

I have never had a system capable of really reaching out there before like this thing can and have self imposed limits of 400 yards or so. That was as far as I felt comfortable shooting in the past. My hunting partner has a hay farm that we usually do some predator culling in the spring on as well as deer in the fall that have opportunity for 1000+ shots, but I am long ways away from doing that right now. Depending on how much time I get behind the gun I am hoping to get a spring bear from at least 600 is my goal for myself. Within 2 years I hope to be good enough on steel to take a moose at 1000+ with it. Not too sure if these are realistic timetables or not but that is what I am trying for.

That sounds like a realistic time frame, 400 yards is very doable with what you have, as is the 1,000, just steady range time and a lot of reloading. Good luck on it !

Pictures from my first day at the range with my new toy. And yes the sticker has since been removed from the stock. However, the childish grin may be permament

Well it took me all of about five minutes to work up to 1,080 with my 300 Rum so I'd say you are dragging your feet ole man... HA!

Naa, just pulling your leg. No one can build your confidence in your, and the rifle's abilities so take as much time as you feel appropriate and have fun.

Confidence is a huge factor in long range shooting that far too few even consider.

The difference between "I know I can" and "I don't think I can" makes for a lot of errors.

I know you waited a long time for this rig so enjoy it.

Re: At long last got my Lapua

I am going to do my best to limit myself to the shots that would astound and confuse me if I missed. I also need to confirm my drops that I have from my ballistic programs before I try to take an annimal with it at any great distance. I am leaving for my moose trip in less than 2 weeks so no chance of getting that done in time for this years trip for sure. Maybe my cow elk in February could possibly get Lapua'd though
