I'd be remiss if I didn't throw the IOR's out there as well. The 4-16 tactical model would be ideal for your purposes and once you learn to use the MP-8 reticule you'll be in love with it.
The way they do their illumination cannot be beat either and their glass is as good as any scope I've ever looked through.
I currently have the 4--14x50 30mm tube as well as the 6-24x50 35mm tube and like them well enough that my next scope will be the new 3-28x56 40mm tube.
I love my Leupold VXIII's and Mark 4's but I like the IOR's overall better than anything I've ever owned or tried.
They also make some straight 10x and 16x models that would work very well for your needs for a good deal less money.
