I reside in Casper. My shooting has been restricted to the range for the last several months due to a little friend I had upstairs that required chemotherapy. Missed the 2001 season but I am recovering slowly but surely. Kinda ugly I am now, but hey, I was never much of a looker anyway.
I intend to make up for this snafu this year. Game animals and varmints beware!
Seriously, the situation has given me time to study ballistics better, improve my hand loading techniques, and concentrate on my basic shooting skills.
I'm hoping to get out in the field by April or May so I can get my physical condition back up to par. There is a huge goat out there in the prairie somewhere with my initials on it! And I have just the perfect load worked up for my quarter bore....
I found you purely through browsing, running a Google search on "longrange" I believe. This is an opportunity to say that this is a wonderful site. You can't get this first hand, state of the art, interactive information in any book, magazine, video or any other imaginable format. Folks here are very generous with thier knowledge from direct experinece. I'm getting answers to questions I've had for years. I can't say enough good about this site. Thanks to you all! Tommy
Found this site by a search a few months ago, been hanging around ever since. Unbeleavable amount of knowledge and experience here.
I went on my first elk trip to Colorado last year. Our guide had me set up on a hillside first morning. As it was breaking daylight I could see elk on the other side of the draw grazing in the Quakies, no bulls. After they moved on (with a little of my help :eek got out the laser, it was 300yrds to the botom of the draw, 450-600yrds to where the elk were.
I've hunted Michigan all my life, longest shot has been under 150yds. I spent last summer at the range shooting at 300yrds prepairing for the trip out west, the terrain out there realy opened my eyes to long range hunting!
Here's my new long range project.
.338 Ultramag, Remington action.Krieger 28" heavy Barrel, with a Vais brake,(barrel is 28" not including brake). I'm steelbedding it into a McMilan Hunter stock. Jewel HRV trigger at 2.5lbs. Tossed the aluminum floor plate and trigger gaurd into the trash and machined one from stainless steel. Going to mount a Leupold 6.5-20 LRT scope on bases and rings I'm also machining out of stainless steel. Being a toolmaker with access to a CNC milling machine has its benifits! I'm here via the campfire, been here before but forgot to bookmark it,(I'v got a photographic memory but leave the lens cap on a lot). Appreciate you guys coming over there,Darryl,Boyd and Wyo, braving the flames, and its nice to find TWO sites where you can say the LR words and not get torched. Its definitely a hot subject sometimes.
