Help Which 7mm 7wsm 0r 280AI 7REm mag

I am doing a 24"broughton 5c barrel. Will I see much difference in velocities with the heavier bullets in this length barrell between these different cartridges? What kind of velocities can I expect?

There is not a lot of difference in the three except the 7 WSM can be used in a short action
an keep the overall length down. also it gives you a little more effective bore length (2.100
WSM and 2.540 for the 280) almost a 1/2 inch.

Thanks, that is a very good point. Is the WSM easy to reload?

I think they are all so close that other things could make your decision for you.

1) What is the current boltface of the action you are using? If it matches one of the options, that would save you some $$'s during your build.
2) Do you have any brass for any of the current rounds.
3) Do you have reloading dies/shellholders etc for any of the options?
4) Is your action a short or long action?
5) Is it going to be magazine fed, or single shot? The 280 will likely get you 1 or 2 more in the magazine compared to the WSM. (depends on action/magazine)

Re: Help Which 7mm 7wsm 0r 280AI 7REm mag

7mm Rem Mag - 168 Berger VLD = 3050 fps
280 AI - 150 Nosler BT . . . . . . = 3000 fps

The 7 Rem Mag will give you about 150 fps more MV than the 280 AI with a 168 grain VLD, based on my experience and research with these two calibers.

If you're wanting to shoot out past 6-700 yds, like out to 900-1000 on large game, I'd go with the 7 Rem Mag or 7 WSM. The additional MV will help keep the terminal velocity sufficiently high for proper bullet expansion at the longer ranges.

What he said! I have no experience with the 7 WSM, but shoot both the 280AI and 7 Rem Mag.

In a 24" Broughton shooting 168 VLD's, I'm getting about 2930 fps with the 280AI using RL22. My 26" 7RM shooting the VLD's with Retumbo gets me around 3025 fps. The 7 Rem Mag could be pushed a little harder, but accuracy falls of in mine beyond that.

Re: Help Which 7mm 7wsm 0r 280AI 7REm mag

If you have a long action mag boltface, then I would definitely go with the 7 rem mag. It will do the same as the WSM with lower pressure. Loaded to the same pressure, it will out perform the WSM. If you already have a short action, then go with the WSM. I know Shawn Carlock said once that his 280AI and his 7WSM were about equal velocities...or pretty close. 7 WSM components also don't seem to be real easy to find right now. Alot of places have been out of stock for awhile. Rem mag brass is easy to find and cheaper.

I guess it comes down to this:

Short Action: 7 WSM
Long Action standard bolt face: 280AI
Long Action Mag bolt face: 7mm Rem Mag

They will all do the job if the bullet is placed properly.
