Grendel AR at 800 Yards

Finally got the Grendel out to 800 yards. Itís a 4 shot group because I lost the first shot, not sure what I did wrong. I think I didnít check the level. In any case, I missed the steel so I stopped and setup again, checked my numbers, dialed, checked the level and put 4 in a 5.01 inch group at 800. I over comped for the wind and hit about a half MOA left.
I set my zero stops for 200, my main zero for 400 and dialed from the 400 yard setting. 140 grain Berger VLDs and the powder was A2520.
Not bad for an AR!

very nice. what velocities are you getting with the 140's? and why didn't you go with 123's or 130's? seems like you could make up for the lower BC with a higher muzzle velocity?

again, nice job

The higher BC for bucking the wind at long range over rides any advantage the extra MV buys you at the closer ranges. My MV is 2390 and the BC on the 140 VLDs is .612. The yardage is known, dialing up a few more MOA at close range is not very important. The wind blowing is the variable across the entire flight path that bites you in the rear end.
The much higher BC reduces the amount of error that I can make doping the wind. At about 600 yards the 140 has overcome the MV and ME advantage that the lighter bullets had. As one long range shooter put it, Velocity is temporary, BC is forever....

My step son shots the 123's, but his gun groups them a lot better, my gun shoots the 140s about the same, so I choose the higher BC.

How long is the barrel ? What size is the target ? Can we get a pic that shows the whole target looks like a nice set up,

Thanks,Keith

The Barrel is a 24 inch heavy. The gun is a Tactical Rifles SVR.
That steel is a big one 3'X2' AR550, next to it is a 16" AR600 and next to that is a 12" AR550. The 3X2 footer is HEAVY, around 100lbs. But it still gives a great sound when hanging from chains. You are seeing almost the whole steel in that picture, only the ears the chains hook to are missing.
Here is the big steel at the top above the ears.

And here is the 16

And the Tactcial Rifles SVR Grendel Serial Number 001

Re: Grendel AR at 800 Yards

I like the targets and the gun for that matter. I thought about a 6.5 grendel but the brass cost so much. I would run it with the gas block open all the way and work the action manually . I have a rock at 775 I paint it and it is easy to see the hits. Most of the time you can get back on target and watch the hits yourself. I have a 20 inch by 20 inch steel at 1100 yards. It is tuff this time of year to much wind. The ground is wet and I need a way so the spotter can see a miss. I'm thinking about carrying lime dust to put around the target. You can only get to it on foot the last 250 yards anyway up hill a tuff walk. You got any ideas on how to spot a miss in wet ground ? Even when it is dry there is so much grass it is still tuff to spot,

Thanks,Keith
