Well boys, here it goes. I have been reading many post and articles on LRH for the past two years and have learned a lot from the guys on this site. Although this is my first post I feel like I already know most of you guys from reading your posts and responses.
First let me say that I am NOT a competition shooter (Lack the budget and probalby the skill for that breed of shooter) I shoot about 100 rounds a year out of this rifle, mostly practicing for hunting season. I have owned this rifle for 5 years and killed an elk every year with it, ranges from 350-650 yrds. Now let me give you my current set up; I have a Factory 700 bdl 7mm Rum LEFTY no bedding or floating. Trigger set at 2.5lbs. I have a Ziess conquest 6.5-20x50 scope with factory turrets mounted via leupold dove tails. I load my own 160 grn accubond, 92.3 grns of rl-25 and 9 1/2 primers. (I am going play with 215 primers and retumbo powder) When I bought this rifle I was very green (currently still green) and thought a good rifle and scope was all it would take to build a LR rifle. Ignorance is Bliss! This site has ruined me and I can no longer go on shooting a factory rig
Now for my question; *BEWARE* Im a NEWBIE and have learned everything so far from reading this site, so please be patient I have realized that the only way to learn is to ask and I know you guys are a great bunch and will point me in the right direction!
I know i am going to have to replace my barrel soon, but I cant decide what to do. I LOVE my 7 rum and am not worried about the barrel life. But i am wondering if I could build something like a 338 edge out of my current action? I know its a 300 rum (same parent case as mine) knecked up to 338. but I dont know if it would be possible or not (chuckles welcome). If possible what would it take? Or should I put the money into a new 7 rum barrel and accurizing work, stock, bedding, recrowning? What kind of barrel, length, ETC?
My budget would be $1500-2000. I would like to Keep my current scope (with the addition of kenton ind. turrets), and I dont want to go to a 30 cal (no offense intended, just not on this particular rifle). I would like to be able to shoot wolves and coyotes out to 1000 yards and still kill elk at the range I feel comfortable with (700 yrds).
What would you guys suggest? any input would be greatly appreciated!
