I second Dan B.'s idea except use a larger caliber pistol. Something like a .41 Mag or .44 Mag with a hard cast bullet like an LBT design. They have a large meplat which is what really dictates the killing power, but don't mushroom and destroy the pelt. If you tangle with a really big tom, you'll be glad you have the extra bullet diameter and weight.

If you have a 22 caliber such as a 22-250, .223, 22 hornet, something that's a tack driver and you have confidence in, I'd suggest an eye shot. I've dropped a lot of Bobcats with a 22 mag through the eye.
