Coues Deer Results--as per Skreech request
Well, I just got back today from an awesome Chihuahua coues deer hunt with El Halcon Outfitters. The bucks were rutting like crazy and we four hunters had filled our tags by the second day of the 5 day hunt. I shot my buck at 1 pm on Day 1 at a lasered 368 yds. I didn't allow enough for the crosswind and my hold on the shoulder drifted into a neck shot which dropped the buck in his tracks. I was lucky and the deer was not on this one-shot kill. He will score about 100 pts B&C.
Perhaps I should have been a little more picky as two of our group shot a 115 typical and a 128 non-typical that will both easily make the record book. The four bucks were taken at 215 yds, 368 yds, 400 yds, and 435 yds. A hunter from the previous week took a nice coues at over 600 yds, and the average shot is typically in excess of 300 yds.
My outfit:
Rem 700 receiver, trued and lapped with an over-size recoil lug and bolt handle; 25" Krieger barrel in standard 300 WM; Jewell trigger. Nosler 165 AB at 3220 fps behind R-22 with Fed Mag primers in Norma cases. Leica 10x42's for general glassing and Docter 15x60's for the tripod. Harris bipod. Bushnell 800 rangefinder. There is much climbing and physical activity on par with a tough mule deer or sheep hunt and the rifle at 12 lbs was a little heavy but manageable. Once you find your buck and stalk to within shooting range, there is almost unlimited time to build a bench rest position for the shot. Although my deer was DRT with one shot, the other hunters required multiple shots and the bucks shot at beyond 400 yds simply stood around (although a bit non-plussed) while ranging adjustments were made.
All-in-all, a thrilling hunt for a worthy trophy. I will try to post some pictures with photobucket....wish me luck.
