Converting Savage 30.06 to 6.5x284??

Picking up a Savage 30.06, not sure what model. Wood stock, blind mag, pre-Accutrigger. Wanting to make it into a fun long range rifle in 6.5x284. What all needs to be done? New barrel, new stock, new trigger, anything else? How do you make it feed reliably, or are you better off getting a single shot follower? Thanks in advance.

I don't know, but someone very wise must have given you this idea.

Model # will be on the barrel. If it is really old it will be on the action near the ejection port.

Just a new barrel will get you shooting. Anything else you want to change will be up to you.

You may need to tweak the mag box lips to make it feed correct. I didn't. Single shot follower will definitely fix any feeding problems.

If you are lucky, you have the 3 screw trigger that can be adjusted easily. If not, the two best options are $85 for a SSS competition trigger or the Basix Sav-2.

Your wood stock is decent. Not great, but better than the plastic Savage stock. Best stock upgrades are B&C stocks for about $100, a take-off BVSS stock for $150, after that the list expands to Stockade, SSS, Russo. Also, I hear that Choate is close to releasing their LA tactical stock.

my 30-06 mag holds 6.5x284 very nicely, I came across some write-ups on how to set the savage pre-accutrigger triggers, I'll try to find them

Trigger Adjustment Savage 110 Trigger Adjustment

Trigger Wire Login

Advanced Trigger adjustment This is how Savage trigger work is performed in my shop
The second ling doesn't work. I see that it involves the trigger wire. There is a guy on Savageshooter that was giving away trigger wire that would lighten the trigger pull. It works very well.

The third link, I wouln't recommend performing any grinding, filing, or drilling on a Savage trigger. It is sintered material. It is very hard on the outside, but softer on the inside. If you remove the hard material to make a smooth even contact area, you've exposed the material to accelerated wear. A worn out trigger pulls like garbage.

If you need a better trigger that what the factory 3 screw can give, get a SSS.

New barrel, Yep! the 284 case aint gonna fit in a 06 chamber and wouldnt shoot fer chit with all that play anyway. Seroisly there are a lot of mfg. that are makeing Savage barrels.
new stock, The factory stock will work as good as anything if you bed it but if you use a bipod the front stud should be moved back a couple of inches.
new trigger, If it has three screw on the trigger it should be tunable enough to work as is. If it only has one screw swap it out!
anything else? It is probably a flatback reciever so keep that in mind when ordering scope mounts. The 20MOA EGWs have been working well for me, they are light and allow most scopes to be fitted with ease.
How do you make it feed reliably, or are you better off getting a single shot follower? It should feed both round well, you may have to adjust the mag lips a little but it aint gonna be much.

I've got an old Savage that goes back and forth from 30-06,25-06 to 6.5-284 on a regular basis and all I have to do is swap out the barrels and adjust the scope setting. The 140 grain Amax from the 6.5-284 does a great job on goats and deer but 168 grain in my 30-06 barrel shoots a tad better and works better for small targets like prairie dogs and paper.
If you get stumped or need the tools drop me a line and I'll help if I can.
I hunted last year with the 6.5-284 barrel on it, got a goat @ 450 yards and a mulie across a canyon @ 620 yards. It was a tad heavy to haul around the prairie specialy with the 3-18 IOR on it but it workt great for the shot. There is a lot lighter 708 being put together this year I hope will shoot as good with less weight to pack around??

Here it is on the bench with the 6.5-284 barrel on it but the other barrels are about the same weight and conour.

Re: Converting Savage 30.06 to 6.5x284??

Hey guys,
I have heard and read of people claiming there will be feeding problems with the 284 case. I am getting a 284 barrel for a savage 111 in 270 and hoping I don't have any issues. I hope that any issues I have will be able to be fixed easily? It sound like if there are problems it is with either the spring not strong enough to push the case up far enough for the bolt to grab? Or the top of the magazine lips needing to be widenend for the same reason. Anybody with any experience able to tell me if I am on the right track?
