cant make up my mind on a new round

I want a round with good barrel life, cheap to reload and is good to practice long range (to a 1000 yards) I was kinda thinking about a 260 give me some ideas please thanks.

260 is a very good round to achieve what it is you want to do. Another is the always reliable .308 Winny. You'll get more rounds through it than the 260. A 7mm-08 could always be fun using a 162 A-max. You can never go wrong with the 6mmbr. It has a good reputation for accuracy and good barrel life. It will use less powder than the above.

If you really want to cut down in powder usage, then a high twist 223 using an 80 or 90 grain bullet. 6x47 Lapua is deadly and very accurate. You asked, so now you are all kinds of confused aren't you.

I chose a custom 260 when I was looking for the same thing. However, I already had a 308. If I had not, I probably would have gone 308 first, then branched out later.

You can get there with a 260. A 6.5 284 Norma or 6.5-.06 will get you there a little better. You can get Lapua brass in the 6.5 Norma and you can get Lapua .06 brass and neck it down.

This is for 1000 yard practice, so you probably want good barrel life. A .308 will do all that for you. Or like said above a fast twist 223 is probably even cheaper to shoot, but a 308 will get there with a lot more umph and with the right high performance handloads you can shoot deer to around 1k with it too.

If all I wanted to do was punch 1K paper with modest cost of operation and have good barrel life to boot I would be looking at the 7mm08. It will win out over the 260 except for recoil. It will also win out over the 308 in the windage department.

The 308 has been my goto round for years. Even to 1K the 308 is easy to shoot good. The 708 however, running 162 AMAX's or 168 VLD's could be even easier. The 308 is not obsolete as the 190 VLD and the 208 AMAX offer some pretty impressive 1K opprotunities even compared to the mighty 162 AMAX but I have to admit the recoil sucks. It is milder than the magnums but is alot more then the 7mm08 with the 162's. I actually have a 7mm barrel on order. It will be chamberd for 7mm08 in 9x for the heavier bullets. This will not be a match rifle though, just a 1K dall sheep stick.

The 6.5x284 is the ultimate 1K paper puncher. It is also the ultimate barrel eater. If money and time are no object, it is borderline impossible to beat it for a match cartridge.
