Which Caliber to Choose?????

Hello Fellow Shooters!! First off......Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there. Hope you have a blessed one!!

I have narrowed my hunt for an accurate, stock rifle (not going the custome route yet) down the the Savage Long Range Hunter, TC, and Rem. 700.....with the Savage in the lead due to its built in features, longer barrel, etc.. I just am stuck on cartridge selection. I already have a 7mm Rem. Mag and 30-06, so I am not looking at bigger bore. I am stuck on 25-06 and 260 Rem. I do not reload at the moment, but hope to start soon. So, I guess it comes down to ammo availability, and which cartridge is more inherently accurate. Is one easier to load for than the other???

It will primarily be used as a whitetail/mule deer rifle out to 500-600 yards......possibly elk if within shorter range.

Any suggestions?

Look into a .257 Wby Mag, if you're interested in LR capable 1/4 bores.

If you go strictly by ammo availability then you will have to go with the 25-06, but if yo are reloading then it is still a toss up. either way if you are planning or ok with sizing brass there are components out there for both. if i had to settle on either of those i would say the 260 with some real nice b.c. bullets low recoil, less powder use, thats why i am going to put together a 260 ackley later this fall good bullet selection.

Re: Which Caliber to Choose?????

I was looking for the same thing a couple of years ago and settled on the Savage in .25/06. I was looking for a budget rig so I went with the standard 111 instead of the LRH, topped it with a Minox ZA5 4-20 open box demo from Cameraland. I ended up with a great mid-range rig for under a grand all in.

One thing to keep an eye on if you go this route, my rifle has a pretty short throat, I had to back off the max load by a full grain. If you only shoot factory ammo it won't be a problem.

I think the shooter is just as important, if not more so, than the gun or the caliber. In other words, if you can't shoot....It don't matter how much, what brand, or what caliber your gun is.

That being said, I love my Accumark .257 Wby.

The .257 Wby is not a cheap caliber to shoot, unless you reload. Lucky for me, I had mine for years before I started reloading, so I had accumulated a good bit of brass over the years, so it is very cheap for me to reload for since I still have alot of factory ammo stored away. If I ever need brass, I go shoot a box and get 20 more.
