This mirrors my experience too, as many already know.
I can honestly say I have tracked many elk and deer from some of the "Premium , True Hunting Bullets" penciling through with a tiny hole, some recovered some not. But never tracked one from a Berger VLD.
Use what you want, or have confidence in, it is a personal choice. But know how it works, what velocity , and where to place it for it to preform to its best ability.
And if you make a bad shot, "man up Nancy" it has happened to most all of us and none of us liked it.
