Re: Best longrange varmint rifle

I'm thinking i'll probaly build a 6mm dasher 1000 yard light gun and up to 1000 yard varmint gun. I hope to start gathering parts within a few weeks. Then afer i get used to shooting long range build a heavy gun in 6.5-284 or something similar. Thanks for all the replys, they are very helpful.
Thanks

Ben

Re: Best longrange varmint rifle

I've got a Tikka in .308 Win I'd like to take to Quantico for the 1000yd club. I'm about 40 miles away too, in Haymarket a few miles off 66 out past Manassas. But for practice I don't know about the range accessability at Quantico--I think you also need to be a member of hte rod and gun club there (anyone know?). Regardless, I'd like to try the factory class shoots every now and then just for fun.

What I'd really like to find is a nice farmer in the area with a nice piece of land who needs groundhogs taken care of every now and then...

Re: Best longrange varmint rifle

I have never been to the range at quantico. I have visited their website and they always have a few people shooting in the factory class. I live and hunt on a farm in Ashland Virginia but in recent years there have not been very many ground hogs around here. There are alot of crows though and they make good targets also, and the 22-250 with the 55g balistic tip does a pretty good number on them if you hit them right.

A 280 rem (or AI), shooting a 162 A-max at 3000fps is the best long range varmint gun!

Highest BC bullet with a expanding tip, going downrange with a speed that gives you 2-3000 rounds of barrel life.

A fast moving 6x284 will explode varmints up close, but I would rather have a windbucking SB when shooting 500 yards and out!

Thats-why-I-have-a-338-Lupa-Magnum-Improved -it-will-shoot-the-300grn-MK-at-3000fps-and-soon-I-will-have-338-Allen-Mag-which-shoots-the-300grn-MK-at-3500fps .-They-will-take-over-when-the-wind-gets-bad.

My-vote-is-still-with-the-6x284-for-overall-varminting.-Anything-over-a-1000-yards-I-would-say-the-280-AI-would-be-a-better-choice-however-must-VOLUME-type-long-range-varmint-shooting-takes-place-around-the-400-to-600-yard-mark-so-the-6x284-would-be-a-much-better-choice-it-recoils-much-less-and-makes-for-a-much-better-show-when-you-can-see-your-bullet-hit-the-target.-Don't-get-me-wrong-the-280-AI-is-an-awesome-long-range-set-up-but-for-volume-long-range-shooting-my-pick-is-the-6x284-or-any-of-the-6mm-chamberings-your-bullet-selection-with-6mm's-chamberings-is-awesome-you-have-so-much-to-choose-from.

Also-if-you-shoot-the-87grn-V-Max-poly-tipped-bullet-your-BC-is-.400-that-is-awesome-for-this-type-of-bullet-and-it-will-be-super-accurate-out-to-1000-yards-with-massive-destruction-on-varmints.

I would have agreed with you a year ago but not since I've been messing with the 270 AM.

It's a whole 'nother league. 169gr bullet w/0.74 bc amd 3300 fps mv. 195gr bullet w/larger bc and 3200 fps mv.

I had been shooting a 270 Win w/130 BTs @ 3200 and doing well out to 700. 800 and beyond was pretty much out of reach.
