Greg's videos are awsome , Darrel Holland has a some videos also that are pretty good. But like these guys mentiond if you could get hooked up with a good builder and maybe work out some sort of trade (your labor for his knowledge) that would be a great way to get started

Finally its the desire to make the rifle as perfect as you can. Its when you accurize a receiver and find out there is a variation of 0.0004" across the bolt face when there should only be 0.0002" or less and then chucking everything back up for another 2 hours of dialing in and remachining just to get those extra 0.0002" evened up in the receiver.

Its the desire to find and use that specific reamer pilot bushing on your chambering reamer that is the perfect match to the bore you are using, even if that perfect bushing is not in the set you have and you have to invest another $15 per bushing to get just the one you need instead of saying "Close enough".

Re: Best longrange varmint rifle

Stanley-I-would-have-to-say-the-6x284-is-the-ultimate-long-range-varmint-rifle.

Here-are-the-reasons-why-I-think-the-6x284-is-the-best
1.-Bullet-selection
2.-Brass-selection
3.-Recoil-is-nothing-with-muzzle-brake
4.-You-will-smoke-the-guys-with-the-.22's-and-other-6mm's
5.-You-can-shoot-a-87grn-V-Max-at-3750fps-and-a-107grn-SMK-at-around-3500fps.

If-you-go-with-the-6x284-make-sure-you-bring-another-rifle-with-you-on-your-varmint-hunt.-You-don't-want-to-burn-your-barrel-out.

The-6x284-IMO-is-the-best-overall-long-range-varmint-rifle-period.-My-favorite-load-so-far-with-my-6x284-is-53grns-H4350-210M-primer-87grn-V-Max.-I-am-shooting-this-combination-at-3750fps-It's-awesome.

Re: Best longrange varmint rifle

well little buddy, get a 338kahn or 338rum improved. Not may shoot varmits with them so you will stick out. If you dont want to be burning a hundred grains of powder a shot though, then go with a hot 6mm or a 6.5x284

Re: Best longrange varmint rifle

Not exactly sure what your wanting as far as the varmint gun goes? , max splat factor? best all around accuracy?

For critters the size of wood chucks and smaller at ranges out to say 800-1000yds I would choose either a fast twist 6mm or 6.5. ,
My vote for 6mm goes to the 243Ackley , you have great brass from Lapua available , its not to bad of a barrel burner and with the 105 A-max it'll get you to 1000yds pretty easy. Recoil is very mild in a 10-12lb varmint rig and its not to finicky of a round. For splat factor you can use 75gr V-max or the 87gr V-max
My vote for 6.5mm goes to the 260 Rem. Again you can use 308 Lapua brass thats readly available and pretty cheap , the barrel life should be around 2000 rounds easy and running a 140gr A-max out at 2800+fps will get you to 1000yds easy and its even less bitchy about what it eats. For the splat factor you can run the 95gr V-max out at around 3200fps pretty easy from what I hear.

With either of these rounds you can shoot them a good bit and if its not enough performance for you you can always rechamber for the 284 parent case.
But you don't need a super fast barrel burner to get you to the long range class , the 6mm BR holds alot of records at 1000yds.
