Re: Best longrange varmint rifle
Not exactly sure what your wanting as far as the varmint gun goes? , max splat factor? best all around accuracy?
For critters the size of wood chucks and smaller at ranges out to say 800-1000yds I would choose either a fast twist 6mm or 6.5. ,
My vote for 6mm goes to the 243Ackley , you have great brass from Lapua available , its not to bad of a barrel burner and with the 105 A-max it'll get you to 1000yds pretty easy. Recoil is very mild in a 10-12lb varmint rig and its not to finicky of a round. For splat factor you can use 75gr V-max or the 87gr V-max
My vote for 6.5mm goes to the 260 Rem. Again you can use 308 Lapua brass thats readly available and pretty cheap , the barrel life should be around 2000 rounds easy and running a 140gr A-max out at 2800+fps will get you to 1000yds easy and its even less bitchy about what it eats. For the splat factor you can run the 95gr V-max out at around 3200fps pretty easy from what I hear.
With either of these rounds you can shoot them a good bit and if its not enough performance for you you can always rechamber for the 284 parent case.
But you don't need a super fast barrel burner to get you to the long range class , the 6mm BR holds alot of records at 1000yds.
