Randolph Hearst imported quite a few and turned them loose on the Hearst ranch (Hearst Castle) along with Aoudad which is located on the coast near the town of San Simeon Calif.. They were quite plentiful in the coast range when I was a kid growing up there. The last one I took was in the early 80's near Mar's Mountain. I don't know if there are any left or not but there is a lot of private land so there may be.

Re: Australian sambar DeeR hunting

Hunting for them in California still goes on although in extremely limited numbers. 3 -5 stags per year I think was the last I had read. The Florida hunt is a 3day primitive camping archery only hunt on an island accessible only by boat. Very low success but would be a great 3 day adventure!

The south pacific is no doubt the best bet for one.... I'm already saving to head back!

Re: Australian sambar DeeR hunting

You guys make me jealous as hell. Between the posts/pictures of Sambar hunting ya'll post and what I've seen on YouTube you make me want to spend way, way too much money on a trip to NZ or Oz... .

Keep'm coming though I'll just have to enjoy it by proxy.
