Which caliber should I choose for semi-long range deer/sheep hunting out to 500-600 yards: 7mm08, 6.5 x 55 Swede, .260 Rem or possibly the .270 Win. I want a cartridge with mild recoil and so I'd rather not choose the .270, plus it has a limited offering of long range bullets. I will be getting the rifle in a Tikka T3 action so any benefits of having a short action from the 7mm08 or the .260 rem are negated. Also, I will reload for the rifle so I will be able to extract the full potential from each cartridge. I've looked at all the ballistics charts I can and just would like some real field experience. If you had to pick one of THESE cartridges which one would you choose and why.

They will all work fine. and my order of recommendations is the same as you have them listed.

7/08 , 6.5x55 . 260 and last but not least the 270.

If you want a short action the 7/08 and the 260 would be preferred.

For a long action the 6.5 or the 270 also a 280 would be great.

That's a tough one...my order would be 7mm08, 260 then the swede. That being said, I ended up with the .260 myself but I also own a .280. If you feel the need for a .277 gun skip the .270 altogether and go for the 270 WSM.
