Re: 7mm Scirroco Bullet Performance Link
Hi.
The video must be dragged to your desktop and downloaded before it can be viewed.
As for distance, it was an estimate - hence the "about". I am in Alberta now for Mulie hunt 2002, and we were back in that area again. This time we were armed with a Leica LRF 1200 laser range finder. We went to the top of the ridge where we *thought* we shot from (the fingers that run down the ravine look very similar and are close together) and ranged the bank where the buck was laying when shot. It "said" 514 yards or something like that. I can't remember exactly but it was in there. We took several readings and it was around there. It wasn't all that important anyway. Funny thing is, I thought it was even further than 600 and was being conservative in my estimate. One thing I learned hunting with the LRF this week is that distance is hard to read in barren coulies and ravines with steep up and downhill views. I mean hard! There were times when I thought deer were about 275 and they were 180. Other times it was the opposite and even more dramatic. That LRF is one cool piece of hardware.
As for the shot placement, the bullet hit the buck low in the front shoulders breaking both and hitting the off bank. Any lower and it would have missed entirely or only broke a front leg. What was said after was something like, "That XXXXer is STILL running." What wasn't said earlier was that he had already been shot in the back leg while running flat away and down from us at about 200 yards. He ran with that broken leg for quite a ways. We lost him in the scrub for a bit, then spotted him taking a breather in the river bed. The second shot finished him off.
Still, I was quite happy with the bullet performance. I can't wait to try the new .338 Scirrocos when they come out.
Oh yeah, the camera was a Canon Elura MiniDV with a 12X zoom set at max zoom.
