7mm-08 rem and wind?

My son and I are going on the whitetail youth hunt this weekend and its going to be windy, At 100 yards how much would a 30 mile hour wind push a hornady SST139 grain bullet the bullet speed is about 2850fps? And at 200 yards how much would this push the bullet? Would a 300yard shot be out of the question?

These are rough numbers but this should give you an idea of wind effects.

100 yards= 2.0 inches
200 yards= 8.3 inches
300 yards=19.3 inches
and 400 yards it will be arround 35.4 inches of wind drift at 30 MPH.

That is a lot of wind and close shots are recomended with that much wind.

Then don't forget to factor the drop along with that drift.

Them numbers is fine but recently we shot 100 yrds in a slightly quartering from the right rear wind and the wind drift was 4" left. That is fact, not some vector calculation. I'd bet a 30mph side wind on a 270 or 7mm08 would be at least 4" in not more. Dont underestimate the wind even at shorter ranges.

I won't argue with that , But the wind drift that I posted were based on my loads and as we
all know these will vary with velocity and bullet weight. I have wind drift for all of my loads
at 10,20 and 30MPH at 90o to the bore. and have tested to 20 MPH and based on that
calculated the 30MPH wind for the drift.

And as I stated .I don't recomend shooting anything in a 30 MPH cross wind unless it is a very
large Magnum or maby a 50 BMG.

The main thing is to test your load in real world conditions to be sure.

Re: 7mm-08 rem and wind?

Thanks for all the help. We went to the range friday and it was close to what J E Custom said we shot up to 300 yard and we hit the targets pretty well so saturday came had the range finder ready and the spotting scope ready, For 12 hours we sat, We saw alot of spike and 4 points.I rattle a few out and finally at 7:30 pm I rattle out a few spikes and and a couple 4 point and they started to fight one another and a 8 point stepped out and started kicking but on the other deer so my son shot the 8 point at 75 yards so all that practice end up to be a short range shot. But thanks every body for the help at the last minute. We got the 8 pointer not a huge buck but he's happy thats all that matters.and I took it in to day to get it mounted. Thanks again
