You can build a 6mmx284 on a SA but it is not ideal. If you do you will have to have a Wyatts box installed. I had one built on a SA and it worked well but I couldn't have done it without a Wyatts box. It will give ya another .110" to work with.

Re: 6mmx284 Question ?

My 6-284 is on a SA Rem 700 and it doesn't have a Wyatt's mag box and it works just fine with the standard Remmy bottom metal.

I can easily touch the lands and still cycle loaded rounds but my overall length is shorter than those using a long action. My bullets are just seated deeper and that does take up case capacity but with the 6-284 being overbore I don't think it's lacking for case capacity.

If you are looking to squeeze every last drop out of your 6-284 then you will want yours setup on a long action or your short action made into a single shot so you can have it throated to get your C.O.A.L as long as you can and have your bullets seated out further so you can get maximum use of that short fat case.

Barnes currently offers the 80 TTSX & the 85 TSX, both of which are short enough to work out of a short action (or should be). Nosler is going to produce a 90grn Accu-bomb But I have no idea if it is availiable yet or not.

The 6-284 is overkill for those pills IMHO, if you really intend to fully utilize the capabilities of an overbore wizzbang superkiller like the 6-284 (I love mine) the largest advantages will come from the heavy for caliber bullets like the 107smk (<what I use), the Berger 115's, the 115 DTAC & the 117 Matrix. This is where the 6-284 will really shine, of course then, you will either need a LA or single feed them.

What grain bullet are you shooting and at what velocity. My guess is your shooting slow for the cartridge, and in that case why wouldn't you save powder and just build a 243AI. Barrel life is also better That fits good in a SA and with the "new" Berger 105's there is no need for a Wyatts box.

Re: 6mmx284 Question ?

CPGfan

My 6-284 is a 1-12tw and I shoot 75grVmax at 3680-3696 fps. My C.O.A.L. is 2.732 (that is 10thou off the lands). I'm using 210M primers behind 52.8gr of H4350. It will shoot .3's pretty easy. It does a smoking good job on yotes out to 600yds. Never shot it any further than that. This is my go to yote getter and where I hunt yoties you rarely get shots over 400yds and 90% of the time they are under 300 which is why I went with the 1-12tw.

Going off of the OP bullet choices I'm guessing he isn't planning on shooting well past 600 yds or he would have been asking about 105-115gr bullets in a SA instead of 80-90 grainers.

I'm probably giving up some FPS with my OAL being set to SA mag length but I doubt any of the coyotes i've killed would know the difference between 3690 fps and 3800 fps but coyotes are some smart son a beetches and who knows maybe they can tell when they're shot with a bullet going 100fps faster.

Re: 6mmx284 Question ?

It may or may not work well, just depends on the throat length on the chamber. A short throated 6-284 will easily fit in a Rem 700 SA mag box with most bullets. Its tight with the tipped bullets or longer ogived match bullets but it CAN be made to work.

Alot has been said about seating the bullets deeper causing a dramatic drop in velocity performance. Will you loose some performance, yes, but it will not be dramatic if your using the mid weight bullets. With a heavy bullet or match bullet you have to seat the bullets much deeper then you would with the ones listed so it would not give up much velocity potential at all. A 6mm bullet in the 80 to 90 gr hunting bullet design does not displace ALOT of case capacity so you would likely do just fine as long as the throat is cut properly for that mag length.

personally, for the money, I would probably still have a wyatts 3.000" internal mag box installed just for added room and flexibility simply in which bullets you could use more then anything else.
