Re: 6.5-284 vs 270 win

IF you want decent brass for a 270 Win, buy Lapua brass in 30-06 and neck it down. You will be able to really see the potential of the 270 w/ a 150. You could always do one better with 270AI. My dad just reminded me of the old load for our rifles which seem to work very well. Rem casings, cci200, 42.0grns IMR4064, and Nosler 150grn Ballistic Tip. Hain't been a deer walk away from that recipe yet in PA.

mmmm... Yeah, I'm liking the idea of the Berger Hunting VLD (150 gr.) in a 270 AI... May have my next Savage (Or T/C Encore) barrel picked out !!

Christmas 2011 hurry up !!

The 270 Gibbs would have a little more snot yet over the 270AI, probly run with or near the 270 WSM I would think, I just happen to be reading on Gibbs right now.

i have shot against a guy with a 7mm wsm ( this round is probably the ballistically superior round among all of these), a .264 mag , .a lot of .223s and 308s . one that i have NEVER beaten is a guy that shoots a 30-06. important is the barrel and the ammo/load.

Re: 6.5-284 vs 270 win

actually that is a round I was looking at that also looks good if you can handle the recoil (in a light rifle I hate it !!) is '06 or 30-06 AI...

With 150's the 270 or 270 WSM looks better, but the '06 would be great for long-range hunting if it was up to accuracy standards...

30-06 use to be one of the premier calibers for target shooting. In some disciplines it still is. It just has been trumped by all the short mags. It is a step up from the 308, and a step down from the 300WM. So it is a matter of picking your poison and making it work. Any caliber can be made to meet or exceed a standard of accuracy.

Re: 6.5-284 vs 270 win

A friend has a 24" Lilja 3 groove on his custom 270. The slowest speed with 150 VLDs and H4831SC and H1000 was 2950. Most were near or at 3000fps!

JMO, but forget anything "Ackley." He didn't improve much of anything other than extra work case forming etc. The biggest gain you get from making an Ackley Improved caliber is "ooooo, aahhhhh, and the wow factor." If someone likes Ackley Improved calibers, that is your choice and good luck with them. I think they are a waste of time with the exception of maybe a 280AI.

There's nothing you can't accomplish in .277 if you use the Win, Roy, or WSM.
