6.5-284 vs 270 win

I know, we've soon tons of messages titled like this...

The 6.5-284 is kind of popular right now with accuracy-plenty and a good long-range record up to and beyond 1000 yards... It has also been described as having a barrel-life (accuracy life) of probably less than 1500 rounds...

The good-old 270 win on paper seems to have similar powder-charges, ballistics (maybe even faster with a 140 grain), and even ballistic co-efficients (berger VLD 150 looks nice). I wonder why as a long-range hunting caliber, the good, old 270 isn't more popular. Also wonder if it is plagued with the 1500 rounds or less barrel-life or is the longer-skinnier powder-column somehow more protective of the barrel throat ??

Wondering because now that I sold my 270 win (Rem) and bought a nice Savage 308 (P/TR), maybe in a year or so I'll get a 270 win barrel for the Savage !!

Re: 6.5-284 vs 270 win

I think you have the advantage over 308 with your 6.5-284 ballisticly. I was thinking the 140 or 150 VLD's looked good for 270 win may have to try them. my son still has a 270...

Re: 6.5-284 vs 270 win

6.5-284 has a very proven track record as being an impressive long range cartridge. The 270 has been around for ages and it doesn't. The issue is that tere aren't heavy enough bullets available in .270 cal that are needed and the 270 needs more capacity if your trying to "scale up" a 270 you are going to need some more capacity and also brass as good and tough as lapua 6.5-284 is.

Re: 6.5-284 vs 270 win

Hodgdon shows a 6.5-284 load (140gr) being compressed at 53.5 gr...
also a 270 Win load (150 gr) being compressed at 59.5 gr...

the 6.5-284 (140) shows a high of 2900 fps (100 V), but the data didn't immediately list barrel-length that I saw on the website...

the 270 win (150) shows a high of 2850 fps, I assume the same barrel-length as above...

Granted these are from the book, but I think they're pretty close except the .264 bullets have a little higher ballistic-coefficient.

Now I've always heard that a short-action cartridge is more accurate than a long-action cartridge, but many 6.5-284 shooters changed to a long-action to accomodate the VLD's and increase powder capacity also...

The 270 has always had a reputation for accuracy especially with 4831(SC) which is also a popular 6.5-284 propellant. I don't know what a person would gain trying a 270 at long-range and he may not win in competition... Then again until someone tries it who knows...

Re: 6.5-284 vs 270 win

Maybe a better comparison would be the 6.5/284 v .270WSM ( or 270/300wsm) to get the better brass.

If both had a quality match grade 30" barrel in a fast twist with high B.C. bullets, it would make an interesting shoot out at 1000 yards.

Re: 6.5-284 vs 270 win

With 140's out of the 6.5x284 and with what I get out of my 270 WSM at a 1000yrds the 270 will be a little better or even at worst, load some 150' or 160+gr bullets then the 270 WSM will start to dominate to a 1000yrds. I haven't worked real hard to see how far I can extend the ranges of the 270win cause the WSM is just so simple!
