Guys I am considering building a 6.5-06 Ackley using a 140gr VLD. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this round. I was first considering a 6.5-08 Ackley or a 6.5X284 but after reading an article by John Bareness on the E.R Shaw Mk-VII 6.5-06 it really sparked an interest in building a 6.5-06 Ackley.
I tried to do a search but is does not like "6.5-06" or 6.5-06 Ackley.
Hot 6mm's were just discussed on the hot 6mm thred and best long range coyte rifles. Look at those threads and the 240 gibbs also which is a blown out '06 case and gets higher velocities. My accuracy loads in the 6mm-06 imp ran around 3250 fps. I din't know what anyone else is getting.
Predictions are difficult, especially when they involve the future
Sounds like you are having fun chosing a new cartridge. Do you have specific performance goals in mind?
The reason I ask is because I built a 260 last summer which I have been doing load development for and I am finding that it is a great cartridge.
It is not as fast as a 6.5-06, 6.5-06AI or 6.5-284, but the maybe 100 fps you give up in speed you gain in barrel life. You can still get 2800 to 2900 fps with a 140 Berger and a 26 inch barrel from a 260, which is still pretty good.
Long Time Long Ranger,
I have been a long time member/lurker and I am not sure if I am using the search criteria properly? I did a search for “6mm” thread and “best long range coyote rifles” and I am coming back with nothing? How far back are the threads and what heading are they under? What bullet were you using in your 6mm-06 IMP?
How long is your barrel?
I have a few long action guns I could have rebarreled to the 6.5-06 Ackley. I did look at the 260rem but did not think you could achieve that speed with a 140geVLD.
I have just gained assess to a farm I will be able to shoot 800 to 1000ydsJ I was looking for something to shoot coyotes and maybe deer.
Harpy I am going to build a 6.5-06 AI on a savage action for next deer season. I plan to hunt with the 130 grain scirroccos or bergers. I am planning a 28" heavy sporter barrel and hope to get 3300 fps. My Nosler manual lists RL22 and N560 as highest velocity loads for the standard 6.5-06 but I plan on giving RL25 a try because the case still has a lot of room with those powders.
I was planning on the 6.5-284 but I understand it will not feed well from the Savage action designed for the 06 case.
