300. win mag vs 300. RUM hunting

what would you pick and why for long range hunting. When i say long range i mean 800 yards and less. Game is Moose and whitetail mainly with a mix of Elk and caribou. Shots will be 800 yards and less. Is the RUM needed or just preferred.

What is your choice and why? Thinking 210 VLD's

Re: 300. win mag vs 300. RUM hunting

I would say go 300 Winny every time. When you leave your ammo at home on your reloading bench and you are deep in the woods looking for it you will remember about 40 miles back you saw a little shack they call a store. They will have 300 WM ammo, not 300 RUM ammo. Just my thoughts.

Dont really need the extra velocity, get an accurate rifle first and practice making the bullet hit right where you want it to. It doesnt matter if you shoot a 50BMG at 800 yards, if you cant hit the animal it doesnt matter.

300 Winny, cheaper, easier to find in a pinch, plenty of poop at distance to kill any game.

It depends on what you are trying to do with the rifle.

The 300 Win Mag 180 factory loads are about the biggest loads you can get from Winchester.
The supreme 180 ammo is 2950 ft/sec velocity with 3478 ft/lbs of energy.

The same 180 gr bullet in the 300 RUM starts out at 3250 ft/sec and has 4221 ft/lbs of energy.

The "factory" 200 gr load velocity is 3032 ft/sec with 4083 ft/lbs of energy.

At 100 to 300 yards it does not make much difference which one you use. But at 800+
yards the 300 RUM will out perform the Win Mag especially with 200+grain bullets.

You can always down load for softer /smaller targets but loading up is difficult for the
larger bullets in a Win Mag compared to a RUM.

The 300 Win Mag is tried and true with 150 to 180 grain bullets but if I were planning on
using 200+ grain bullets my choice would be the 300 or 338 RUM.

300WM and the new Berger 215. Will be all you need for anything. If you load with 185's, Bryan Litz is producing new target ammo with this bullet.

Off topic but what are the new 215 bergers?

And plus one for the win mag if you never plan on going past 800. If yourun the numbers out to 800 then you'll see the energy levels are ,while at the edge if it range, still acceptable. So while the RUM gets it done better and farther out ic you are not going to use it's potential then why deal with the extra recoil?
