I assume that your talking about the 416 Rigby case?

The 338 Lapua is based off of the 416 Rigby case , not sure what all changes were done to it but I don't think you would gain anything by necking down the 416 case to 338 rather than going witht he 338 Lapua or the improved version

X2
I examined the same thing because a friend has a 338-416 IMP Reamer.
to much like hard work!! Dies, load data etc Lapua has done it all for you even as 300 Lapua.

Unless that type of build smokes your tyres, then do it.

All the best, lets us know how it all goes.

The 338-416 rigby is as good as it gets for hunting. You can build it in a 10 1/2 pound rifle scoped out and ready to go hunting. To get more out of a 338 you have to go with a chey-tac case or similiar and get into a 16 plus pound rifle that you can not effectively hunt with. The lapua is based off a shortenned 416 and is a completely different round. The nearest thing to the 338-416 rigby would be the 338-378 wby and either will get you 150-250 fps over the lapua and just a bit more over the ultramag stuff. The 416 brass is easy to get and far cheaper than the lapua or 338-378 wby. I run the 225 accubonds with the .550 bc between 3400-3500 fps in my 338-378's and 338-416's. In a 10 pound rifle the 300 matchkings kick like a mule and in a hunting situation in the mountains around 800 yards is about all you can do most of the time with 100% success anyway. All considered I am much more accurate inside 800 yards with the lighter bullets. Plus, with the flatter shooting bullet I can use my mil dots and not have to fool with clicks inside that range.

If you can drive to where you hunt or have a horse then build it in a long heavy barrel and shoot the 300 matchkings and the 338-416 will shine way out beyond a 1000. Listen to people who have built and shot these big guns for 30-40 years and not the begginners or people protecting proprietary cartridges.

Thanks for info. I am planning on building a 36in. barrel gun and shooting the 300 match kings. It wont be arifle to carry far, around 17 to 20 pounds. long range is my main goal on this project. I'll probaly shoot it in the mile shot in ohio when we go to 1000 matches.

I have a similar build in the 7mm416 can also go 30-416 or 338 -416 just by changing the barrel Be prepared to do a lot of case work but it shoots great Lawton action 8000 repeater with chey-tec box clip 32in kreiger with break weighs around 19lb. with 5.5-22 nightforce With the break you can see every shot. Also have a heavy gun 338-378 you will like either If you are looking for a smith try Bruce Baer has alot of ex. with these

What kind of velocity are you getting, I thought about the lawton but last year ordered a action an 3 months turned into 9 months and they just gave me a run around. I am a machinst by trade and I am able to do my own work but I am going to contact bruce baer for some info. I'm in the process of build a 2in. dia sleeve for rem. 700 might give it a shot. If work stays steady might order a Bat after first of the year. DO YOU HAVE ANY RELOADING DATA ON THE 338-416 OR VELOCITYS
