Re: 270Win

My choice of scope for the 270 would be a Leupy Vari X III 4.5 x 14 x 40 with an AO. Wonderful scope.

I have tried a good many calibers and finally settled in with the 270 caliber. About 85 % of my hunting for the last 39 years has been with a 270 and I have had a number of them. I hunt mostly in SC and TN with white tailed deer being my largest quarry. The most accurate round I have shot was 35 grains of 3031 powder pushing a 85 gr. speer boat tail bullet out of a 6 mm rifle. I never felt adequately gunned with the 243 or 6 mm rifles for white tailed deer even though I used 105 gr Speer bullets in them. Many people love them though. The 270 would do everything the 06 would do with less powder and noticeably less recoil. However if I lived out west I would seriously consider the 7mm or 300 WM. Wonderful thing abiout this country ....... the right to choose and use the one we want ....... or at least that has been the case.

Re: 270Win

All I know is I shot a coyote in the hip and it literally destryed the entire hip area with no exit? personally I like the v- max for th efact that it is a high fragmentation bullet. Thats been my experience.

Re: 270Win

Does anyone use Win760 powder in their 270 hand loads? I started out with it and Hdy 130gr SPs and eventually developed a decent load that shoots between cloverleaves and 1.5 MOA 4 shot groups. The load is 52.0gr W760, GM210 OAL 3.280. The equipment is a Leopold 3-9 X 40 on a Browning BAR 22" barrel.

But with that mix I only get velocities up to about 2780fps, more powder and the groups become inconsistent and pressure builds.

H4350 has not solved the velocity problem and not increased accuracy. I developed a 130gr TSX load of 54.0gr 4350, and that yields about 2860fps. Seating the bullets .010 deeper and its 2930fps but excessive pressure signs are happening; flattened primers and headstamp of ejector pin. One Winchester case even ruptured and it had only been reloaded a few times!

(I'll add that the 110gr Sierra Pro Hunters hold consistent sub MOA with the W760 - 56.7gr, going out at about 3200fps.)

For these lead free TSX hunting bullets (soon trying 130gr GMX) I would like to boost the velocity another 100 - 200 fps without the excessive pressure.

Any suggestions based on your experiences?

I have not tried anything slower but I have some RL22, IMR4831, (and H1000 which I guess is too slow).

Thanks in advance, guys.

Re: 270Win

H4831sc is an excellent powder for 270. It has produced excellent results with many bullets in 270 for me and is my favorite powder for the 270. I have found IMR 4350 to be good as well. Although I haven't tried Win 760 for tghe 270 I am currently working with it for loads for a 22-250 AI and a 260. A friend of mine has used it in 22-250 and 220 Swift for many years and aftrer trying many powders he now uses nothing but Win760. Because of his experience I am working towards a load for the 2 mentioned calibers. He said that in addition to being the best powder he has used it is also a cooler burning powder and should increase barrel life.
