.270 good enough?

the 270 is a fine round and has put more meat on the table than any ultra magnum has. That being said, for long range it wouldnt be my first pick. Although I do believe Berger is making a VLD in .277 now. But if you were considering putting money into a "longer range" rifle with minimal work, maybe rebarrel it to 280 Akely Improved. It seems to be a farely popular round and I beleive you would get them most bang for your buck in a standard bolt face with this round.

I asked the same question last year. I had a successful African plains cull hunt using the .270 Win. with Nosler 150 PTs to take ten animals, and the .338WM with 225s to take one. These calibers were very effective, but after thinking over the various shot presentations and results, I decided a commercially available cartridge which was flatter shooting than the .338, harder hitting than the the .270, and effective out to 800 yards would be even better.

After discussing this with Kirby Allen, we decided the 7 STW would be an excellent choice for the purpose. Of course, for handloaders one of his magnums would be even better.

BTW GG, my hat's off to you (and/or your client). A 756 yrd. shot like that with the .270 is very, very difficult.

I love the .270. I own a .270 wsm and have taken game with it at distances greater than 700 yds. I think that there are better choices out there if you want to go that route but the .270 will work very well to kill deer.

I'm not speaking for GG here. But a shot at that range with the 270 is not "very, very difficult" . 756 yards is a very comfortable range for me, my 270, and my ammo, in fair conditions. I'm quite certain the same is true for 7mmrhb.

First, the picture say's it all Goodgrouper, Your skills are very impressive. I am curious what the muzzle velocity is on your 140 AB load. I have been using IMR4350 & H4831. I am curious what you are using.
I seem to remember a thread here (I think?) regarding the 270 in a Sendero. The thread went on and on with folks singing praises of that combo.
I have hunted with a 270 since 1981 and have had excelent results with it. With my 270's I have not shot past 175 yds on a buck. With the closest being 12 yds.
The two rifles I have in 270 seem to top out at 3000 fps with a 130gr bullet. They have factory barrels, one is a Remington and the other is a Tikka T3 lite, both have 22" barrels. And that seems to be the most limiting factor for me.
Therefore I will pick up a 7mm or 300 Mag when I know I will be hunting in the wide open. While I use the 270 when I am headed for the timber. I think my issue is just a "head game" thing with me. But that's the joy of big game rifle collecting.
My Tikka T3 Lite is oufitted with a Leupold VX1 2-7x32 scope, a nice light weight package, nothing fancy, just a nice little meat machine.
LewisH gave you a good piece of advise, I think you would do better with a 7mm STW.

Thanks for the compliments but the only thing I had to do with this kill was taking the picture and I helped drag it off the mountain! This was 7mmrhb all by his lonesome. He found the buck on the opposing hillside, put the gun on his walking stick, ranged the buck, dialed his scope and dropped the buck! Then he used his cell phone for the first and last time and called me to help get this animal out!

As for the load, I think he is using H4831 and he is getting around 3050 fps with it. I'm not sure what the charge is but it would vary by lot anyway.

Thanks for the info on the load, I was just curious. I wish I could get my rifles to go that fast. Oh well - better safe, than wounded...
