.270 good enough?

I have a .270 win, and i'm wondering how accurate and lethal it would be on big game long range fixed up? Is it worth getting a different caliber, or would my .270 do the job if i spent some money on it?

How far and what size game do you want to shoot. .270W is only a marginal cartridge for true long range big game hunting.

Ideally, I want to be able to take an elk from as far away as my gun will let me, and still be lethal. About how far would that be?

You tell us how far can you hit consistently? What is the MOA your 270 shoots?

In .277 not a very good selection of high bc bullets and that is why 25, 270, 35 and 375 calibers are general not used for true long range whether 1K Match shooting or True Long Range Hunting.

The 270 would not be my first choice for a long range rifle for reasons as stated in previous post. The 270 is good for elk out to 400 yards or so with the right load and bullet, and if the rifle is accurate and you can shoot it. I have hunted with two buddies for years that shoot 270’s and do it very well. They consistently bust mule deer and elk out to 400 yards but I think that is the exception not the rule for most shooters.

Well, how 'bout this:

Pick the right bullet and put it where it counts!
I could just about put my fist through the exit hole and the shoulder was jell-o!

Yup, I'm with UncB and GG on this one.

The ol' winnie has been known to perform to at least 830 yds.
