the 260 is based off the 308 the 6.5-06 is based off the 30-06, they are close in performance but they are not the same caliber.

NO, they are the same caliber, just like a 308 and 30-06 are the same caliber, 30 caliber.

The 260 and 6.5-06 are 26 caliber.


They are different cartridges.

I love any 26 caliber cartridge but I voted for the 6.5-06.

Here's my hunting pard and we're practicing at 950 yds with light rifles. He's shooting a 260 and I shoot a 6.5x284.
At distance, 700 yds and on, the extra powder in the 284 case seems to make a difference to us anyways.
He would have no problems killing a deer outright at that distance with the 260 though and neither would you.
His is a bit more pleasant to shoot.
One thing about the 6.5-284, it will give you the same as a 6.5-06 without necking down or up.
