Re: 257 AM stikes again, HARD!!!

RDM416,

Glad to hear that big girl is finally shooting well for you.

TO get a 510 AM you basically take a 50 BMG and convert the case to the Allen Magnums shoulder and case configuration!!!

The reamer is on order and will be here in about 5 weeks!!!

It will be a serious hog of a long range hammer. Looking to play with the 2900-3000 fps range with a 750 gr ULD or better yet standard 50 BMG velocity(2700 fps) with a 900 gr ULD.

Richard tells me he can build up to a 1000 gr ULD RBBT bullet for this beast. I will have to work with Dan Lilja to get a faster twist in his 50 cal barrels though as the 1-15 which is standard for the BMG will not handle these huge bullets. 1-10 or 1-11 will be about right though.

I just got in my AR-50 which will be the test platform when the reamer gets in. I will be fully accurizing the receiver and fitting a Lilja 35" barrel to her. Should be a fun winter project.

Still need to get the die situation figured out though.

Kirby is 35 inches enough? I have a co-worker using a 42 inch and he uses 1000 gr. I have to ask him some particulars the next time he wonders through. For awhile he was shooting solid copper VLD's. I also think that it's a 35 pound class gun with moving barrel

The reason I don't know allot about his gun even though I have attended the same shoots is: Your a person with a wealth of good solid information and likeable. This upper management co-worker is the opposite. 99% BS and proud of it!

Re: 257 AM stikes again, HARD!!!

Budlight,

A longer barrel would certainly offer more ballistic performance but the reason I decided to go with the 35" pipe is so that it could be more directly compared to traditional 50 BMG rifles which will have 30-36" barrels in most civilian offered rifles. Some are offered with extremely short barrels but in my opinion these are not viable long range tools.

I want to see how the 510 AM matches up against the 50 BMG in similiar length barrels. If I put a 45" barrel on this beast, it would certainly produce better velocity, especially with 20N29 and the heavies.

Still there are those out there that would claim the only reason for the higher velocity is the unusually long barrel and not the design of the cartridge.

I want to see what it will do head to head with the BMG and let the chips fall where they may. At least it will be a fair comparison between the two.

Also, the AR-50 is not a good option for a +40" barrel in my opinion. 35" is abotu what I feel should be max length for this receiver and more importantly, stock design.

Good Shooting!!
