Re: .243 and blood trails?

The 140 lb doe and 200 lb buck were both with Federal Fusion 90 gr both were pass throughs, the two 100lb deer were with Winchester PowerPoint 100 gr ammo, one passthrough, one just under the skin on the off side.

The deer I lost this season was with Win PP ammo as well, dont know if it was a pass through.

I know this stuff was far from premium ammo, but in these cases I knew I would be well under 300 yds so I didnt think it mattered.

The reason I am so interested in a good blood trail is because although I hunt open fields, they are surrounded by either young pine farms, or old woods that is super brushy and thick. Even if they make it just 40-50 yards in, it can be very hard to find deer.

I can only shoot factory ammo right now, so would a premium bullet like the Partition be a better choice? I am not sure how a Ballistic Tip would perform in a 90-100 gr bullet on large (250lb is possible) whitetail. Would that be worth looking into?
Thanks, I really appreciate the help. I am getting a .30 cal of some sort this summer, but I would like to use the .243 as well. Its just alot of fun to shoot.

Federal Premium - Rifle Details

That is the Federal 85gBTHP Sierra load. Should be available somewhere. I have heard the fusions are ok too.

HSM has the loads with the Berger 95gr VLD for $25.29 per box. If they will shoot accurately from your rifle and you put this bullet in the lungs, they will go feet instead of yards. I've shot or seen shot around 10 deer with the VLD and none went over 20ft even on a gut shot.

Partitions work well also, but the deer will be more likely to run after the shot because they don't create as devastating a wound channel, but will likely exit. The 100gr Sierra gameking or 95gr ballistic tip would expand more than the partition and create more internal shock.

If you want them dead in their tracks, I'd give the Berger a try.

Try a 25 caliber you wont have to look for blood trail.

Shoot them in the neck with a weak bullet or the off-side shoulder with a premium bullet and there won't be much, if any, tracking.

you don't say where you are. most deer here are not that big. i was never concerned with a blood trail it just blew them right over. if you want a blood trail shoot tsx . however i like a softer bullet first choice for me would be a parttion, second would be a 100 horn or sierra. have not shot anything with the berger 6mm, but had great results with 7mm 168 so that would be a good one too.

I agree with the 85 grain sierraHPBT. I know of 4 Pa. bear kills with this bullet and none of them moved off the spot. One ot them was a 300 pounder shot at 500 yards. It really works on deer and usually they don"t move off the spot and when they do, they let a good blood trail. Matt
